Walking

Whatever your kind of walking - from lakeside stroll to  scrambling on knife-edge aretes - Alcaig Cottages make the ideal base.

The cottages make the perfect base for hillwalking and Munro-bagging. Why? Because it's so quick and easy to get so many parts of the Northern Highlands from here. The start points for around 60 Munros are within an hour's drive of Alcaig with a further 100 within 2 hour's drive, including The Cuillin of Skye.

So within an hour of leaving you could be starting to climb some of the most spectacular and finest mountains in the UK - such as An Teallach, Liathach, Beinn Eighe, Slioch, Beinn Alligin.

It's not jut the quantity and quality of the nearby mountains, it's their variety too.  The high, rounded Cairngorms offer totally different walking compared to the towering sandstone formations of Torridon, the dramatic inselbergs of Assynt or the jagged gabbro of The Cuillin.

You don't have to drive far to reach a mountain: the cottages overlook Ben Wyvis - a mountain of superlative views - and nearby is the beautiful Strathconon - a glen with 2 fine Corbetts and lots of quiet walking.

If you like your walking more sedate then there is a plethora of river-side, loch-side, woodland or coastal walks just minutes away.

If you're staying in the cottages and intending to walk, we can supply you with maps. Just ask.
