2. AUTUMN
COLOURS.
September, October and November see fantastic displays of autumn leaf colour none
more so than in the glens closest to Alcaig - like Strathconon and Glen
Affric.
3. HOGMANAY.
Scotland is the
place to usher in a New Year.
4. SHOPPING.
Inverness has the most varied and extensive shopping in the
whole of the Highlands - perfect for Christmas shopping or the New Year
Sales.
5. WILDLIFE.
The chance to see witness amazing wildlife
spectacles: for example the Red Deer rut or seeing Grey Seals pupping
in Autumn. From Autumn to Spring visitors to Alcaig Cottages
are treated to the sight and sound of thousands of Greylag and Pink
Footed Geese at dawn and dusk as they roost overnight on the
Firth.
6. WINTER
SPORTS.
If you're a snowboarder or skier then Cairngorm Ski Centre is
an hour
away which has the most reliable snow in the UK. There are many
opportunities for Nordic skiing and ski-mountaineering in the immediate
area such as on Ben Wyvis or in the Fannaichs. For walkers, the
mountains are at their most dramatic, challenging but rewarding.
7. THE
NORTHERN LIGHTS. The longer nights bring an increased
chance of seeing the Aurora
Borealis, especially because of the miinimal
light
pollution in the Highlands.
8. THE
WEST COAST.
Less than an hour away, the West coast has no midges in
winter,
those single-tracks roads are far emptier and you can have some of the
world's most stunning beaches totally to yourself.
9. THE
WEATHER.
The weather
you might ask? Admittedly it can be dreich
in winter but on clear, cold, frosty days, of which there are many, the
scenery of the
Highlands as it its best. Plus, February to April is the driest time of
the year on the Black Isle. March, for instance, sees more sunshine
than September.
10.THE
VIEWS.
Whatever the weather, stay in winter and you will wake up to views like
these:
